Chapter 6 - The Road To Stardom

In most respects, things were progressing nicely. Unfortunately, there was one serious problem...they didn’t have a recording contract. Scooter always knew that this wasn’t going to be easy, but it proved to be much more challenging that he had predicted. Scooter met up with countless executives from major and minor record labels, but although they saw some promise in the young singer, they would not commit to a deal. The big issue was that Justin didn’t have a ‘platform.’ That is, he wasn’t a TV star in a show on Disney or Nickelodeon. What the executives were looking for was the next Miley Cyrus or Drake Bell - an artist backed by a TV show that reached millions of people worldwide, making it easy to promote their songs.

Scooter found this incredibly frustrating, as he felt that Justin actually had the best platform of all - that is, a huge subscriber base on YouTube who listened to his videos because they liked them, not because they had been spoon fed them on TV, like it or not. Yet he couldn’t find a single record company that shared his view. They could see that YouTube could be useful in promoting an artist, but no new star had ever been discovered on YouTube...and especially not by the youth of the world themselves. That was just too far fetched to happen...or so they said.
